Remembering Dr. Antony Jameson
Dr. Antony Jameson, whose work in computational coding formed the basis for modern high-performance aircraft, has passed away at the age of 91.

Dr. Antony Jameson, a Texas A&M University professor in both aerospace engineering and ocean engineering, died Thursday, June 11, at the age of 91.
His innovations in the field of computational fluid dynamics form the basis for more than a dozen different types of aircraft that are used everywhere from commercial airlines to the military, as well as the design of optimized ship hulls.
The implementation of his computational codes is what formed the foundation for the shift from aircraft design by testing in the field to aircraft design by simulation. This allowed companies across the world to create new high-performance aircraft with precision engineered wings and fuselages before any materials were cut.
His career spanned six decades and took him from his childhood home in England through four U.S. states before settling in Aggieland for the last years of his life.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Cambridge University with honors in 1958, then received a Ph.D. from Cambridge in 1963. He came to the United States as an Alfred P. Sloan Foreign Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before returning to England to serve as an economist for the British Trades Union Congress. Subsequently, he served as the chief mathematician for the Hawker Siddeley Dynamics Missile Division.

In 1966, he joined Grumman Aerospace and the New York University Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in 1972. In 1980, he joined the faculty at Princeton University and in 1982 moved to Standford University. He came to Texas A&M in 2018 and was named the Jack E. and Frances Brown Chair in Engineering in 2020.
Beyond academic achievements, he has been the recipient of many awards that highlight his value to aerospace engineering. He has won the Daniel Guggenheim Medal for lifetime achievement, the Elmer A. Sperry Award, the Gold Medal from the Royal Aeronautical Society, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AAIA) Fluid Dynamics Award, the Spirit of St. Louis Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the John von Neumann Medal from the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics and the Pendray Aerospace Literature Award. He was an Honorary Fellow of the AIAA, a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a foreign member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.
He received Docteur Honoris Causa from the Uppsala Universitet in Sweden and from the Université Pierre-et-Marie-Curie, Paris VI, as well as an Honorary Professorship from the Northwest Polytechnical University in China.
He published a book that demonstrated his expertise in the field of computational aerodynamics in 2022.
Jameson leaves behind a legacy of great impact in the field of aerospace engineering and a lifetime of research that forms the basis for modern aircraft models that are still in operation today. His memory will live on in the aerospace department through his colleagues and former students.
