Borazjani selected for Fulbright Distinguished U.S. Scholar Award
Texas A&M mechanical engineering professor Dr. Iman Borazjani will collaborate with researchers in Brazil to advance machine learning tools for precision medicine.

Dr. Iman Borazjani, professor in the Texas A&M University J. Mike Walker ’66 Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been selected as a 2026-27 Fulbright Distinguished U.S. Scholar to Brazil.
As part of the prestigious program, Borazjani will collaborate with researchers at the University of São Paulo to advance computational and machine learning tools for precision medicine. His research will focus on improving image-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to support faster, more personalized medical diagnoses and treatments.
Borazjani plans to develop machine learning methods to identify regions of the heart in 2D echocardiography images and accelerate CFD simulations used in patient-specific cardiovascular modeling. He said reducing computational time is critical for bringing advanced simulations into clinical practice.
“I do not believe AI can replace rigorous solutions of engineering equations and scientific computing, but it can help with quicker solutions,” Borazjani said. “I expect to utilize machine learning and quantum computing for quicker solutions to complex engineering equations.”
Borazjani will work with faculty in the University of São Paulo’s Center for Mathematical Sciences Applied to Industry and collaborate on projects involving rotary blood pumps and heart valve simulations. He said the partnership combines complementary expertise in computational engineering, mathematical sciences and precision medicine.
“This research will help move from traditional to precision medicine where diagnoses and treatments are personalized, which benefits society,” he said.
Through this opportunity, Borazjani will collaborate with researchers in Brazil while building partnerships that could lead to future research and student exchange opportunities.
“No one can do everything by themselves, so it is essential for researchers in different fields, such as engineering, computer science and medicine, to collaborate to advance computational tools that can be used in clinics for every patient” he said.
